+drhhelp dragonhealing

DragonHealing is a skill, not a craft. It is most often taught at Candidate level to Candidates, but in fact, anyone who wants to learn can train in it. Being a rider doesn't make you any more or less skillful at it, though goldriders have an advantage that their dragons can force an injured dragon to hold still using their telepathy combined with the fact that other dragons will not disobey a direct order from a gold dragon. Most riders learn enough to do first aid level healing on their own dragons.

People wanting to learn advanced Dragonhealing using the latest techniques can attend a school for DragonHealers at Ierne WeyrHold. This school has all the latest medical technology, special equipment, labs and devices that Weyrs would not generally make room for. It is, in fact, both a school and a research facility for dragonkind. It lacks a hatching ground for egg studies, but there is the DragonHealer School Annex for Pregnant Gold Dragons and Egg Research at Xanadu Weyr, who works with the main school at Ierne on issues concerning dragon breeding, pregnancy and eggs.

Xanadu Weyr's High Tech Hatching Facility will be housing the DragonHealer School Annex for Pregnant Gold dragons and Egg research. Looking into fertility issues in gold dragons, treating small sickly hatchlings, researching genetics to see if larger numbers of dud eggs or sickly hatchlings in a clutch might be caused by genetic problems, etc. They will have a research area with a backup incubator for small eggs that might need special attention or to be used if the heating in the main sands fails.

The main school for DragonHealing is located at Ierne Weyrhold and the Annex for Pregnant golds and eggs is at Xanadu Weyr, due to Ierne not having any hatching facilities.

+drhhelp rank

DragonHealing is NOT a Craft and does not use Craft Ranks. If it were made a 'Craft', then it would contradict rules against riders holding Master rank titles. Thus is is a SKILL, not a Craft. Do not use Apprentice, Journeyman or Master in conjunction with DragonHealers. There is NO such thing as a DragonMaster on Pern. This title was not approved. DragonHealers are either Certified to heal dragons, or they are not certified and are in training under a Certified DragonHealer.

Grades of DragonHealers:
1. First Aid for dragonkin. Can draw fluids, take tissue samples, give vaccinations, bandage wounds, assist another DragonHealer in stitching torn wings
2.Can do wing stitching, assist DRH3 or DRH4 DragonHealers in operations
3. Low Risk Surgery. Operations not involving internal organs, such as compound fractures, removal of foreign objects. May assist DRH4 or DRH5 DragonHealers in operations.
4. Dragon Surgery. Operations on internal organ not involving brain or heart. (requires assistants)
5. Advanced Dragon Surgery. Heart, brain or other high risk operations. (requires assistants)

Certified DragonHealers are those above Grade 2.
Grades are Experience Based, starting at when you first began as a DRH. You must be at least 14 turns old to begin training.
Grade 1. Up to 1 turn experience. (min age: 14)
Grade 2. 3 turns. (min age: 17)
Grade 3. 6 turns (min age: 20)
Grade 4. 12 turns. (min age: 26)
Grade 5. 20 turns (min age: 34)

+drhhelp illnesses

Hidecrack infections = Caused by failure to keep a dragon's hide oiled. Starts out as a dry, scaly patch and the dragon complains of itching. If left untreated, can crack and bleed during flight or trips between. The crack can then become infected and the dragon must be grounded until it is healed.

Constipation = A dragon's anus is located, oddly enough, at the end of the tail, just under the spade shaped tip. This makes it easier for them to defecate while between, so the droppings can be left outside the dragon's 'jump field', preventing them from reappearing with the dragon, falling to the ground and creating a problem for anyone down below. Therefore, a dragon's tail becomes thicker when they need to defecate. A constipated dragon will have an unnaturally thick tail and will need to be purged by a trained dragonhealer.
